City by the Sea plot

"When you're searching for a killer... the last suspect you want to see is your son."

Vincent LaMarca is a respected Manhattan cop who returns to his neighborhood - Long Beach, New York - to investigate the murder of the notorious drug dealer Picasso. However, LaMarca is stunned when he discovers that the prime suspect in the case turns out to be his drug-addicted son Joey. The detective hasn't seen or heard from his son in years. After all, his painful divorce from Joey's mother had left an unbridgeable chasm all along. Once his superiors discover that LaMarca has a personal relationship with Picasso's suspected killer, he is removed from the case. But the cop can't watch helplessly and he goes looking for Joey himself.

Strong cast, decent budget, a remarkable underlying story and yet a disappointing film. That's called a pity. Still off to a strong start with the wandering Joey on the boardwalk in Long Beach. A few nice locations and shots, nice music and the transition to a more dramatic tone is also reasonable. Despite the fairly heavy material, it remains a lightweight in that respect, while it is an excellent opportunity to take a good look at Vincent LaMarca's psyche.

However, it is not given much time and de Niro does not manage to evoke much compassion. Apparently, public-friendliness is more important than the man and it must quickly return to a thriller. Then you get such a forced scene in which de Niro sits in the open air and the voices chase through his head (and speakers). So that doesn't work. Just like the obligatory denouement can no longer make an impression. It's not really boring, but at a certain point it is quite saltless.

Pretty good crime story doesn't work as well as drama in this story of a New York cop (DeNiro) who gets involved in a murder case in his old hometown of Long Beach. When his estranged, addicted son (Franco) is revealed to be the prime suspect, DeNiro must determine where his greatest loyalties lie. A strong supporting cast (Frances McDormand, Eliza Dushku and William Forsythe) more than compensates for the script's shortcomings.

With a cast like this you would expect that not much can go wrong. In principle this is also the case: the story is well told and there are few things that stand out in a negative sense. However, I not only expected that not much would go wrong, but also hoped for an exciting film. The latter was a little off. The premise is interesting and Robert De Niro and James Franco in particular do a very good job of it, but I only started to empathize with their characters late, so the climax didn't have the necessary impact on me in the end. In any case, City by the Sea does not make much of an impression. It's been a few weeks and I've already forgotten most of the movie. Not annoying to watch, but the film turns out to be a no-brainer.

2.5*
