As the title of the film suggests, Heat is central to Body Heat. The film breathes the atmosphere of a muggy summer evening and there are many dialogues that refer to both literal and figurative heat. A lawyer, who is a womanizer in his spare time, falls in love with a rich businessman's handsome wife. Together they come up with a plan to kill her husband.

Body Heat seems to be a remake of the 1940's Film Noir Double Indemnity, a movie I happened to see a few days ago. Body Heat I think is better developed and more exciting. In turn, I think Body Heat influenced the Breaking Bad spinoff Better Call Saul. There we also see that the lawyer adapts his behavior to the target group (especially when it concerns older people) and that he suffers a fairly lonely existence next to his job.

The film is beautifully shot and the music by composer John Barry was also very good and had a nice Film Noir atmosphere.

All in all, Body Heat is an atmospheric and entertaining Neo Noir from the 80s. Not very special, but a good thriller from Lawrence Kasdan, especially when you consider that it is the directorial debut of the Star Wars writer.

The title literally refers to the heat of Florida, the hottest state on the American mainland. We see sweating torso and we hear crickets chirping. In reality it was apparently cold during the filming. Figuratively, the title refers to the eroticism and the tension. The color red is often used as a symbol of temptation. Fire is a motive.

The neonoir style borrows elements from the 1940s. Visually there are the Venetian blinds, the shadows, contrasts of light. William Hurt plays an anti-hero, Kathleen Turner a femme fatale. The intrigue resembles that of Double Indemnity. The style of the dialogues is cynical. The dilemma between justice and hedonism is also the contrast between Ned's two colleagues and friends, played by Ted Danson and JA Preston.

There are also differences with the old style. The Hayscode had been abolished, so the eroticism was allowed to be more explicit and the criminal could get away with it. After that yearbook surfaced, she'd better stay out of the US for the rest of her life, but her dream of living on a tropical island with a lot of money has come true.

The intrigue is quite complicated. There is still some legal wrangling possible as to whether that first will becomes valid again when the second one expires. The woman introduced as Mary Ann is actually Matty, the first photo in the yearbook. She didn't protest because she was blackmailing Matty (actually Mary Ann).

This is a sultry thriller about temptation, the blurring of moral standards and the dark sides of the human psyche. Thanks to the brooding atmosphere and the nihilistic attitude, it remains excellently rewatchable, even when you already know the denouement.

Forerunner of Basic Instinct, in a stylish classic film noir jacket, with appropriate music and a heat wave as a background for the necessary intrigue. Femme fatale Turner is very sophisticated and so insatiable that womanizer Hurt almost gets calluses on his penis. I found Turner convincing, that innocent and vulnerable game makes you tend to believe her, even if she's lying all together. Hurt also convinces as a sloppy lawyer who follows his klabanus.

In terms of shots, there is little to see (I would have liked to see a bit more of the environment), although the film was shot competently for the most part. Such a story could have been in a few episodes of an (excellent) police series on TV. But the A-actors make it extra enjoyable and cinema-worthy (only Ted Danson is too much fobbed off with a supporting role).

The strongest part is the story. Nowadays you rarely have to die, so this one can be cherished. But the direction and the pleasant pace are also nice.
