At times an entertaining film.

The fictional character Matthew (Matt) Scudder is central. This was invented by Lawrence Block. The character appears in several books. In 2014, Liam Neeson played this role in A Walk among the Tombstones (2014). This is also the only connection they have.

In this film that role is played by Jeff Bridges. The role of prostitute Sarah was originally going to be played by Jamie Lee Curtis, but Rosanna Arquette took her place. Vyto Ruginis made his film debut, and it was the last theatrical film for director Hal Ashby. Ashby's career went into a downward spiral. He started using drugs and was fired 20 days after the shooting. He could only get a job as a television director. Unfortunately, he was never granted a comeback. He died on December 27, 1988 at the age of 59 from pancreatic cancer.

Oliver Stone's original script was rewritten by R. Lance Hill. Stone, in turn, said he was not exactly happy with this, because many things were adjusted. This resulted in too many deviations from the original script. The producers were also unhappy with Hill's adjustments, and called in Robert Towne. Hill felt badly screwed and made this clear. According to Mark Damon, Ashby ultimately discarded the script, and the actors and actresses were instructed to improvise their dialogue.

It's a shame that the script doesn't quite live up to expectations. I was really annoyed at the end. The tension is suppressed by a lot of unnecessary and noisy shouting from the characters. Still, the film looks reasonable, but it is far from a top film.

Andy Garcia was nominated for a NYFCC Award as Best Supporting Actor.

2.5 *

Mediocre film about an ex-cop with a drinking problem tries to help a prostitute. The film opens with a nice opening shot, and the finale is also worth seeing. However, it often collapses and the plot and characters hardly hold any interest. A fine cast in this last film by Hal Ashby, who has delivered a few classics in the decade before (this is clearly not one).

With such a good cast you should have gotten a lot more out of it. The drawling 80s music didn't help as far as I was concerned. Can't stand that continuous canned music where some synth-hungry composer pops out one muzak after another.

The story is a bit thin and the atmosphere, the tone never becomes really dirty or dangerous or really exciting. It ripples a bit and takes quite a while before a "problem" arises. A bit of fooling around with local pimps and whores, well... I think Bridges is great, but it just doesn't come out well in this film.

But it's not bad or anything, everyone does their own thing and yes, I'll give it three stars because it's quite okay, but I'll soon forget this film.
