Poor quality for sure, but just like a bad piece of music can sound good to your ears, I enjoyed myself with 211 despite the shortcomings. If you go to see a Cage film these days, you know it's not an A brand, so it's your own fault, but I can assure you that he has done even worse work in recent years. 211 is just a hard, somewhat cheap-looking action film, situated around one event (a bank robbery) and initially set up like the infamous disaster films of the seventies: Before the spectacle (well, yes) starts, we are shown a lot of loose and unsatisfying storylines around the characters who later in the story will each play a role in the action in one way or another. Cage himself only appears on the screen after about twenty minutes, and does not really have the absolute leading role here, but is more one of the many protagonists. Those who like a simple but reasonable shoot-it-all movie will be satisfied with the last half hour, although we know that after something as beautiful as Heat, this type of movie will never be the same. Just a B movie that you have to be in the mood for.

Kenny [Michael Rainey Jr.] is on the verge of expulsion after knocking out his bully. The school comes up with an alternative punishment that aptly illustrates the lack of credibility of this action thriller: he must ride along for a day with officers Mike Chandler [Nicolas Cage] and his partner and son-in-law Steve [Dwayne Cameron]. But oops, a group of armed bandits have set their sights on the local bank in the otherwise quiet Massachusetts town. A smooth, but utterly ridiculous political thriller with forced melodramatic twists.

Nicolas Cage was not particularly impressed with the film, and even described it as disappointing. The actor broke his ankle during filming in Bulgaria, and was out of action for two weeks. This was the third collaboration between Cage and his son Weston. It was also the sixth collaboration between Nicolas Cage and Millennium Films after The Wicker Man, The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans, Drive Angry, Trespass and Stolen. The film was originally scheduled for a theatrical release on June 14, 2018, but was instead released straight-to-DVD on July 28, 2018.

The only positive thing about this film is that Cage also realized afterwards that this is just bad. Especially the acting is crap in several areas. This could have been a strong action film, but the script is full of unbelievable moments.

2.0 *
