In Belgarde County, Illinois, wanted criminal John Carl Lowman runs out of gas in a deserted area. He then hijacks a couple's car and kidnaps their diabetic teenage child Amy. FBI agent Megan Saunders, whose colleague and lover was murdered by Lowman in a bank robbery, takes on the case. She discovers that Amy must have insulin within twelve hours or she will die. However, her boss wants to take her off the case precisely because of her unhappy past with this criminal and her former partner.
