¡Three Amigos! plot

"They're Down On Their Luck And Up To Their Necks In Senoritas, Margaritas, Banditos And Bullets!"

Mexico, 1916. The poor village of Santa Poco is ravaged by the murderous gang of El Guapo. Beautiful villager Carmen hopes for the help of the '3 Amigos' to free them from these bandits. She knows these men from the silver screen and sends them a telegram. The 3 Amigos are the three Hollywood actors Lucky, Dusty and Ned, who fight evil in their films and of course also conquer. They were just fired by film magnate Flugelman and are therefore happy with the telegram that they interpret as an invitation to perform in Santa Poco. Arriving in Mexico, the three actors first think that their opponent El Guapo is also an actor. But they soon realize that this time they have to deal with real crooks.

Nice bland comedy about three Mexican movie cowboys who have to expel a great villain from a small town. The story is of course very predictable, but there are also a lot of fun jokes in it that are almost just as predictable. I also had to think of the Laurel & Hardy movies. There you see the jokes coming miles in advance, but you still have to laugh about it. Although Laurel & Hardy were of course the originals.

A wonderful western comedy by John Landis that mixes very fine humor with unmerciful nonsense. Steve Martin, Chevy Chase and Martin Short. Nice.

An original comedy. The story revolves around the idea of hiring actors who have become famous in a certain hero role and then placing them in the same situation as in their fictional capacity. But then in the real world with real danger. I think it's an original idea that a later comedy like Galaxy Quest (1999) made grateful use of. Although the idea in Fright Night (1985) was also applied, I suddenly realize. Smaller scale and much less hilarious, but still. Anyway, a great starting point for sparkling situation comedy.

And the comedy is good. The three talented protagonists produce delightfully funny scenes, in which it would not surprise me that there is a lot of improvisation here and there. The arrogance, naivety and conceit of the less talented characters are reasons for wonderful humour. The western clichés that are ridiculed are also a source of entertainment.

The film is not a continuous barrage of jokes. Every now and then the pace is slowed down and it's time for more sophisticated humor that merges wonderfully with the ever-present absurdities that occur in the story. The variety keeps the level high.

With music by Randy Newman. I absolutely hate Randy Newman's music. However, the performance of 'The Ballad of the Three Amigos' that kicks off the film and which is sung by Martin, Chase and Short is particularly hilarious. The songs 'My Little Buttercup' and 'Blue Shadows' were also spiced up with visual distraction and were tolerable. Fortunately it went well.

Even with Randy Newman's music, ¡Three Amigos! wonderful entertainment.

Painful.

John Landis has become notorious for the dangerous and sometimes even illegal practices with which he films. When I see exploding houses or sets in this film, I immediately wonder how many people have been injured. That should not spoil the fun of the film, because that fun was not there in the first instance.

Three Amigos is a film that likes to make use of the trio who play the lead roles. Separately, they are big names in the industry. Steve Martin, Chevy Chase and Martin Short. It's hard to really miss these names in our world. Yet no name succeeds here. Because despite the great pressure that Landis puts on their comic talents, they all remain very annoying characters.

Yelling, scripted dialogue and funny face pulling. Three Amigos throws everything into the mix without the ingredients really working. What does work are the fairly large environments that are blown up colossally. Fortunately, that produces some impressive action scenes, but we are mainly talking about background filling while the focus is really on the foreground.

It remains a tiring whole that lasts and lasts. The forced play of the film actually makes it especially uncomfortable to feel comfortable. Landis does have a knack for making movies entertaining through clunky decor, but not if it has to be forced through with another big pile of silly jokes and weird faces. Then comes Three Amigos. Tiring ride, glad when it was finally over.
