The Rum Diary plot

"One part outrage. One part justice. Three parts rum. Mix well."

Freelance journalist Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp) knows he has to make choices for his life and career, but postpones that moment as far as possible. He decides to leave for sunny Puerto Rico to work at 'The San Juan Star'. Paul's new, somewhat strange colleagues show him the way in the wonderful world about which the newspaper fills the columns every day. The lack of news on the disorganized island means that they spend their days on the terrace of their favorite bar. Paul quickly gets on so well with colleague Bob Sala (Michael Rispoli) that they become roommates. But then they get involved in a dubious development plan by wealthy American Sanderson (Aaron Eckhart). The fact that Sanderson has a stunning girlfriend (Amber Heard) doesn't make it any easier for Kemp. Her appearance leaves an indelible impression on Paul's troubled mind and even prompts him to finally choose a direction.

Good film about an American journalist who goes to work for a local newspaper in Puerto Rico. Even though the story is not exactly balanced and it all lacks some direction, the film itself easily looks away. There's a lot going on and it's quite funny here and there. Furthermore, a beautiful, sun-drenched location and a fine role by Johnny Depp (a relief to see the man in a make-up-less role again). A narrow 3.5 stars.

Weak film thanks to a ridiculous script, which hangs together like loose sand and constantly shoots in all directions. There's little wrong with Amber Heard's beauty, but a few acting lessons before appearing in front of the camera would be nice.

I was on the verge of turning off the film at several points. If only I had done that, because this was just a waste of my time. How come comedy?

“Do not confuse love with lust, nor drunkenness with judgment.”

Beautiful locations, a summery atmosphere, a nice slow tempo, Amber Heard, Johnny Depp finally back in a good role etc. The Rum Diary does a lot of things well. The film's problem is the mediocre script, and despite all the positives, it's also just boring at times. It's fun to watch a bunch of drunk journalists, but their adventures aren't interesting enough for a two-hour movie. The Corruption subplot doesn't come through very well either, and I'd rather just watch the crazy adventures of Depp and Rispoli all the time. Including Heard, of course.
