The Hired Man plot

Ezry Hollins works as a day laborer on the Endicott family farm. He's in love with their daughter Ruth and wants to go to college. Ruth helps Ezry with his studies. When he's saved enough money, it turns out Ruth's brother has stolen money from the bank. Ezry helps him out by paying for the stolen money with his tuition. When Ezry and Ruth dance together at a ball, the couple is betrayed by a jealous admirer of Ruth's. Ruth's father fires Ezry, but he rehire him when he saves him from a fire.
