The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill but Came Down a Mountain plot

"A romantic comedy about a man, a woman, and the mountain that brought them together"

Ffynnon Garw, an idyllic village in Wales, during the First World War. Reginald Anson and George Garrad, two surveyors from the British Topographical Service, arrive in the village to verify that the local mountain meets the requirements to be mapped as such. It must be a thousand feet high to be recorded as a mountain. However, it measures only 984 feet and is therefore little more than a hill. The villagers decide to raise the hill by the required twenty feet.

A small and friendly film that might have been a classic had it been made under the Ealing logo in the 1950s, although I doubt there was such a dark note as Ian Hart's (and Hugh Grant's) traumatic war record at the time. ) would have been cracked. Anyway, in 1995 this film mainly got attention because Hugh Grant had just become a star thanks to Four weddings and a funeral; twenty years later it is mainly a sweet but not particularly memorable film about an England (or I should say of course:) a Wales that never was.

In my opinion, this movie is very overrated. the most successful part of the film is the title . In fact, everything just didn't work out with this film, which makes it a downright boring film. The idea of a 'narrator' is nice (although not very original) but is not developed further, no perspective changes and the element does not add anything to the film. Huge Grant acts fine, completely in his comfort zone you see Huge Grant as Huge Grant is. Nothing wrong with that, but he doesn't know how to lift the film above average either. The story is very predictable. That is not surprising for such a film, but something of an unexpected twist would have done the film good. The acting performances aren't great either. Consciously heavily over-acted, and you have to love that. Although I do like English humour, I haven't been able to discover much of it. What was 'humor' in it was mostly bland. Well, what kind of movie is this anyway? I don't think it's worthy of the title 'comedy'. It really wasn't funny enough for that. I couldn't find drama either. Unfortunately, the romantic part they brought in doesn't work either. There is no chemistry between Huge Grant and his co-star. It even took me a while to realize that the Romance was meant to be real and not (consciously) faked. Unfortunately, that says something about Miss Elisabeth's acting performance, I'm afraid. All in all a disappointing film that I unfortunately can't give more than 2 stars.

You have to be in the mood for this light-hearted film. Just a nice simple picture and well acted for this kind of script. The first half is very nice and witty, the second half is logically more drama than comedy, only I think they could have kept a bit more humor in it.

You know it, the kind of comedy where certain fun can't work out well the entire movie time because the viewer gets used to the situation and characters. Other directors who can argue with that, they are rare.

In the end, surprisingly fun and well acted, knowing the script. The writer above thinks it's all overvalued and I do understand that conclusion, but then I simply think that you can't appreciate the TYPE of film and will therefore estimate with the wrong approach. Such a simple video is fine by me and then I think it's very nice that the actors have also done something with it.
