Watched this movie twice. The reason I watched it a second time is because I heard a lot of good comments about this film. So I wanted to give it a second chance, but unfortunately I have to say that I really think it's a mediocre romcom.

In itself, the atmosphere that prevails between the friends is nice. The group dynamics and the humor they often use together is entertaining to watch. But I don't like the whole romantic part at all. As far as I'm concerned, there's just very little chemistry between MacDowell and Grant. Anyway, I'm not a big fan of hers and this film is no different.

It's also all a bit too easy. She is getting married to an older man, which makes him remarry his ex. But then suddenly Carrie is in front of him again because she is suddenly away from her husband. And then he dumps his ex at the altar to get back together with Carrie. Hmm, a bit too simple in my opinion.

And then indeed Kristin Scott Thomas, as described by BBarbie, what addition her character had. There is exactly 1 small dialogue of maybe 4 sentences in which she indicates she is in love with Charles and that's all. Verder you can see her walking a bit lost through the image without further addition. As if they wanted to have another big name in the film, but really had no idea what to do with this. Too bad, because of course she's not the least.

Because of this, the romantic part just doesn't work out for me. And in terms of humor it is nice in itself, but it is not the case that I have been constantly in a dent. Overall, still a poor film in my opinion.

“Another wedding invitation. And a list. Lovely.”

Four Weddings and a Funeral is a nice rom-com. The concept of four weddings seems a bit contrived, but it is an original idea and the atmosphere and the actors make it a pleasant viewing experience. The film isn't particularly funny, but the clumsy behavior of Grant and some of the other actors makes you smile on the couch.

Yet the film is also a romantic drama because of the funeral, of course, but also because of the somewhat sad character that Scott Thomas plays and the somewhat icy attitude of MacDowell. I don't know if it's meant to be, but MacDowell came across as very distant in the scenes with Grant and I didn't see that attraction. I don't think MacDowell is a very nice actress either, I have to say. But actually there is something about that distant atmosphere between Grant and MacDowell and it is refreshing to see that the film does not immediately fall into sweet dialogue and over the top romantic expressions of love. It's all wonderfully British and a bit more down to earth. Also a nice one.
