"One Devil of a Motion Picture!"
Based on George Bernard Shaw's satirical take on the American Revolution. The film shows how the British lost "their" American colonies; A stupid government mistake causes someone to forget to announce that General Johnny Burgoyne (Laurence Olivier) needs help in defeating the rebels.

Kirk Douglas, Burt Lancaster and Laurence Olivier are strongly cast in this sharply written satire based on the Bernard Shaw play, as he shows how the arrogance and incompetence of the British fueled the revolution in what would become the US. Lancaster is a pious, honest preacher, Douglas an unpredictable troublemaker and Olivier a British officer who watches with sorrow as his troops commit one blunder after another. The animation sequences reinforce the pleasantly satirical tone of this historical drama that does not have the illusion of being based on too many true facts. An entertaining film, an absolute must for fans of the excellent acting cast.

When the subtitles started and I saw those three absolute top names, I thought for a moment 'huh, how is it possible that I don't know this film?'
But in the end it turns out that it is not exactly a high flyer. A fairly straightforward story about the uprising in old USA. Comedy as a genre I had not given this film either.
Olivier, finally, steals the show as usual (with the necessary smearing).
