Actually my favorite Jim Carrey movie, because behind the pranks and antics a lot of sadness is hidden. You can't be a comedian (humor doesn't stand alone) without a little bit of sadness ringing through it as well. Underrated movie. Director Ben Stiller immediately took advantage of it to implicitly comment on the uprooting of society by the media, especially TV. In that respect Stiller could make a nice 'successor' based on the social media that actually provides for a much greater virtualization, abstraction if you like (and thus destroying natural social connections). Matthew Broderick great find as a man Carrey wants to be friends with.

Little to. For a comedy I laughed ridiculously little at this, if at all. I can always have Jim Carrey, and he's just really not bad here, but as a whole this doesn't work at all. His character is nice in itself, and every now and then his performance goes so badly overboard without going bad that only Carrey can pull off such a thing.

But that's where the positive literally ends. The story is boring and so are the other characters. Matthew Broderick knows better than anyone how to put down a charisma-less turd, there was no dynamic in it. And such an actor as Jack Black simply does not get any comedic material. Well, okay. That knight tournament was still okay, but for the rest the film just goes by without really getting anything out of it. Unfortunately.

Did what I expect from a comedy: to amuse me. I missed this movie in the nineties but I'm glad I saw it anyway because this is vintage Jim Carrey. Great pace with action and jokes so that it never gets boring from start to finish. It's great to see Carrey paired up with Matthew Broderick here. Their interplay is vibrant. Besides Jim Carrey's crazy jaws and overall expression, it's also a pleasure to enjoy a screenplay and dialogue that are crammed with all kinds of film and pop references.

The theme of the film seems very nineties at first sight, but on the other hand I found it striking how the Cable Guy turned out to be a visionary whose predictions have since more than come true. We no longer live with just a TV screen and an occasional computer, but in a multimedia world. The underlying critical social vision of the film is therefore still current and more current than ever. Albeit that the message of the film is undermined by the medium with which the message is proclaimed, ie the film itself, which again glues the viewer's attention to a screen. A meta side that reminds me of Carrey's other meta movie The Truman Show.
