Winifred 'Freddie' Jones (Betty Grable) is a saloon singer who shoots into action when her boyfriend Blackie Jobero (Cesar Romero) cheats on her. Unfortunately this time Judge Alfalfa J. O'Toole stands in the way, after which Freddie flees to the small town of Bashful Bend. When she arrives there, she is mistaken for the new school teacher, whom the parents have brought over for their children in the town. In her new identity, Freddie also courts wealthy banker Charles Hingelman (Rudy Vallee), who owns a wealthy gold mine.
