" I've always been kind of a pacifist. When I was a kid, my father told me, "Never hit anyone in anger, unless you're absolutely sure you can get away with it." I don't know what kind of soldier I'm gonna make, but I want you guys to know that if we ever get into really heavy combat... I'll be right behind you guys. Every step of the way."

Nice comedy with Bill Murray and Harold Ramis and directed by Ivan Reitman. Still completely different from Ghostbusters.

Stripes is about John and Russell who join the army out of boredom. However, the basic training is very disappointing and the two get into trouble again. The party really starts when their platoon is selected for a special assignment in Europe...

The story might be a bit chaotic towards the end and not all the jokes are equally funny, but I still thought this was a very strong comedy. I actually like 80s comedy a lot more than those terribly cheap comedy movies you see so often these days. Bill Murray is hilarious here as usual and I thought the late Harold Ramis also had very strong moments. Furthermore, John Candy and Warren Oates were also very funny. And then you have some good acting performances, Sean Young among others

Music by Elmer Bernstein, who also worked on Ghostbusters, is great. Nice typical army music.

All in all a very entertaining 80s movie.

This is level groundhog day. 80s comedy should be a category in itself, even though groundhog day is a 90s movie . Great movie to watch too many times. This is a movie that should be in your closet by default.

Do you remember him, that annoying classmate, colleague, guest from your football team, who always acted just a little too loud? Who always thought of himself as very funny, but was especially loud and stupid? That's pretty much Bill Murray in Stripes.

For me this was quite disappointing. You take a group of misfits, put them in a setting where it's inappropriate, you add in a wanted romance (or two), and you're done with your formulaic ('80s) comedy. Now that can still make for an entertaining film, just like I can enjoy formulaic horror or detectives. But in a comedy it's nice if it's also funny, and that doesn't work very often in Stripes. Murray is boring, luckily there are a few more entertaining supporting roles from John Candy and Harold Ramis. The ladies look good, and now and then there is still an entertaining scene (at slapstick level), but it doesn't get much more than 2.0*.
