In London, Max Tracey falls in love with Sylvia Robertson and it is love at first sight for him. Sylvia is staying at the Grand Palace Hotel, where Max works as a waiter. Although Max is having a secret affair with the Countess Peggy Ricardi, he takes immediate leave when he intercepts Sylvia's train tickets and discovers that she and her father are planning a skiing holiday in the Swiss Alps. Sylvia is delighted to see Max followed her on the train, but she doesn't really know anything about him. However, Max's knowledge of the French language seems invaluable to Sylvia and her father.
