Red Rocket is set in Texas City. A desolate town in an industrial area. An area of smoking chimneys, countless overhead pipelines and ugly factory buildings. An area where it is never quiet. Even at night the machines continue to hum. Strangely enough, it is not a disturbing sound, but the sound is reminiscent of the chirping of crickets. It's a comforting sound. Despite its gloom, the area exudes something reminiscent of security.

In this setting, the main character Mickey rides his bicycle through the deserted streets and the film builds an illusion of a never-ending summer vacation. The weather is sluggish and the sunsets are beautiful. Director Baker brings in a sunny depressing atmosphere in his film. Tragic stories lurk behind the summery facade. Behind this backdrop lies a bitter world.

Once a successful porn star, now retired and broke. Mickey has returned to his hometown. Saddled with disappointments, he is looking for a renewed realization of the American dream. A new start in a familiar environment full of empty promises.

The character of Mickey is an insufferable character possessed of an intrusive superficial view of things. An excellent role by Simon Rex who, by the way, started his career in porn films. Mickey manipulates those around him. He drops them or pulls them into the abyss. Mickey is a fantastic repulsive protagonist. And yet you can't really dislike this slut. There is also a certain mischievous charm hidden in his personality, which endears. This dynamic ambivalence fits perfectly with the duplicity of the summer decor, which unequivocally has a gloomy soul.

Red Rocket is a delightful character study. An emotional whirl that beautifully connects tragicomic elements with pure drama. Fine movie.

Simon Rex is perfectly cast as the seedy Mikey Saber, a former porn actor who is penniless. He decides to leave Los Angeles behind and return to Texas, where he tries to train a 17-year-old girl as an up-and-coming porn star. Leave it to director Sean Baker to make this a memorable one. The film is both funny and poignant, set against the backdrop of a desolate, impoverished Texas. The movie goes on a little too long and has some subplots that aren't all that compelling, but Rex's manic tour-de-force alone makes this worth watching. And Suzanna Son is excellent as 17-year-old Strawberry.

A film that should be just as good, but at least as good as The Florida Project and that makes a big impression. Tragi-comic, raw edges, all certainly true. But in Sean Baker's own style, which combines semi-documentary techniques (the hand-held camera, the tragic documentation of the neglected, deplorables, and gloomy decaying cities) with stylistic and narrative absurdism (embodied in the character of porn actor Mikey Saber).

At first it hardly seems to have any depth, but those who are open to it gradually see a lot of content about human tragedy, motivations, and The American Dream in this alienating but fascinating character study. Just like with The Florida Project actually. The highlight is the beautiful scene in which 'Strawberry' out of the blue (after a sex scene) sings a beautiful and moving song - testifying to great talent - and Saber almost ignores this and proceeds to the mundane order of the day.[/ spoiler] This contrast is very evocative of Baker's intentions, which seems to emphasize the gloom and distance from true beauty and comfort in the lives of his characters.

In Red Rocket more happens, and the story is so over the top that it holds the attention better than in The Florida Project. It is not a film that has a very positive mood, but it certainly impresses with its unique cinematic narration.
