Hmmm... Thought this was a very sympathetic film with excellent actors. Plot is not much, but for this film the themes are more important than the plot. It's about growing old with dignity. Find the figure here in mm on the low side. Film is also on Netflix NL as of today

4*

Touching film, which rises above itself mainly due to the excellent casting and design. The story doesn't add up too much. A group of retired musicians live in a retirement home specially designed for them, and their routine is disrupted when a diva and ex-wife of one of them (Maggie Smith) moves into the house. The outcome is guessable.

The locations and decoration are really beautiful, almost idyllic. The least we have to give Hoffman as a debut director is that he shows us a striking amount of beauty in a film that is in fact about decay.

The cast is truly outstanding. The hilarious Billy Connolly and the grumpy Maggie Smith naturally attract attention, but Pauline Collins and especially the (sometimes too) soft-spoken Tom Courtenay are even more the heart and soul of this film, in my opinion. The rest home is also populated by a whole trio of veterans from the British opera and orchestral world, who are often allowed to add beautiful atmospheric touches to the scenes.

The presence of 'real' musicians also enhances credibility, because we don't really see the protagonists singing themselves. Wisdom comes with age, I think, it would have been dramatic if, out of a misguided kind of method acting, they thought they could learn to sing in half a year, a la Ryan Gosling's jazz piano skills in La La Country.

I'm not completely euphoric, all in all there could have been a little more conflict in the film. Especially the third act, which stretches half an hour after the characters are no longer having problems with each other, takes a bit long. It sometimes makes Quartet a bit too civilized a film. But a very nice one.

Bit of an old fart movie. It's not bad, but it's not very interesting either.

Nice to see Billy Connolly again after seeing him in "What We Did on Our Holiday" recently. Cool guy that is, again an entertaining figure.
