In a small town, Hrabal's father Francin runs a brewery. His life actually revolves around his beautiful wife Maryška. Besides being beautiful, she is also caring and intelligent and that makes every other man want to get to know her better and that worries him. Everything is going well until Francin's boisterous brother comes along.

Baggerman put it well. You could call it a 'sweet' film. Beautiful in color, with flowers and blooming trees and happy people everywhere. The film exudes pre-war Czechoslovakia, the first republic, so to speak. Life at that time is of course idealized by Menzel, but that is his right. Because everything that came after was terrible. The twenties are characterized by 'progress' and new ideals. You can't help but be infected by it.
