Reasonable film about a gold mining town where only men live. A musical western with a nice story in itself, but the film is really too long. Some entertaining scenes and a quite spectacular finale. Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin do a great job together (especially the latter plays his role nicely and thickly).

Pardner, there comes a time when the party of the first part has no recourse but to knock some sense into the party of the second part! You're staying!

This is a rare genre combination of Western, Musical and Comedy. Special people who are crazy about all three genres can't have fun. It's going to be a lot harder for the rest of us to get through.

Paint your Wagon (1969) is about a woman who comes to a small town in California, where no woman lives and where many people have never seen a woman. Friends Clint and Lee hilariously get involved with the woman.

The story starts with difficulty but becomes quite funny a little later with a lot of miserable songs that don't all sound good. I took that for granted for an hour. After that, however, the story dozes off and I couldn't keep my attention. It all takes way too long and I missed the possible plot.

Ha, I thought this was a very successful concept, this comic Western musical. A lot of the critics of this movie don't seem to fully realize that there's a good layer of irony over it. Moreover, the entire Western part is actually not that important in terms of content. Because even if that offers an excuse for large-scale sets in the wild nature, this is in fact about emancipated freedom-happiness, which is in line with the zeitgeist of the year in which the film was released.

Wonderful role by Marvin as anarchist 'anything goes' adventurer. Eastwood is quite stark in comparison, although it is funny that he is actually parodying his own image. And Seberg's role as a voluptuous quasi-trophy wife is quite different from Godard's.

The only downsides are the length (unnecessary, because there are really some superfluous or too long scenes) and the moments when the film almost threatens to derail in bland Mel Brooks humor. The latter is always avoided just in time, fortunately.

Apart from that an unexpected discovery. And really something for the lazy Sunday afternoon.
