Bob Ross is of course the main source of inspiration for this tragicomedy. Wilson puts on a respectful, convincing parody, but can do little to salvage McAdams' weak screenplay. Carl Nargle [Owen Wilson]'s painting shows have been a ratings hit for years at the Burlington Public Broadcasting Center, the center of public television in Vermont. But his sweet-voiced presentation style, his hippie spirit, not to mention that pipe, no longer fit in with modern times. So when the much younger Ambrosia [Clara Renée] fills in for him, his future is at stake both inside and outside the studio. There are many nice ideas, but they are all insufficiently developed.

What a mediocre and even extremely boring film. Normally I like Owen Wilson, but he can't do anything with this role and this scenario. He does put on a big afro wig and speaks so quietly it's almost unintelligible, trying to imitate Bob Ross, but of course that joke won't fill a whole movie. Even the always funny Stephen Root can't save Paint, although he tries his best. I'd much rather watch the real Bob Ross paint a nice painting in a youtube video in twenty minutes than waste 96 minutes on this movie.

Owen Wilson has a sympathetic head. He is not a great actor and yet he gets away with it because he has a favorability factor with his sympathetic head. Place him in a quirky comedy with cheerful colors and his charismatic bakkes will do the rest. In 'Paint' (2023) Owen Wilson still has a sympathetic face, but with a big afro and a lisping voice he tries to portray a character in the spirit of Bob Ross. And that is exactly what Owen Wilson should not do: play characters. The result is that 'Paint' (2023) spreads one tiring SNL sketch (Bob Ross as a spineless womanizer stuck in the seventies) over 96 minutes. And that is way too long for a character who is actually not that funny. Owen Wilson must be Owen Wilson, with that sympathetic face of his.
