Entertaining movie, but not one that really works. It's a black comedy, that much is clear, but I had the feeling that it was all meant to be a little more black than it came out. At the same time, I had the impression that there were also some attempts at drama, but that didn't quite come into its own here either. Also the ending is a bit of a downer (though it was unexpected that the two stupid sheriffs were eventually able to kill the killers, I thought those two were just in the movie as cannon fodder).

It is clearly a film made in the shadow of Pulp Fiction. Witty violence and nonsensical, but entertainingly written dialogues, mixed in a crime plot with colorful characters: that kind of film. However, it lacks that finesse to make it into something brilliant, although it certainly has its moments, such as the murder at the beginning and the painful audition scene. And the acting is excellent. Zellweger does a great job and Kinnear is good as always. Quite an underrated actor actually. Most notable is Freeman, in one of his best roles. Not hugely different from what we're used to from him, but just a little more touching and funnier.
3*

This was another original story. A bit of a strange start, which wasn't exactly comedy, but eventually the atmosphere became a bit looser, more cheerful. The cast consisted of a lot of famous people. They all played convincingly, although they were all rather typical roles that they played before.

The music was quite striking, sounded familiar and suited the film.

I thought it was a great film, which kept me interested for the entire running time.

Pretty weak comedy despite the excellent cast. Roles are not very deep, Kinnear and Freeman thought they still acted quite strongly, but Chris Rock once again shows his limitations as an actor and Zellweger's incessant grimaces also proved tiring in the long run

The story is not comedic enough to be labeled a comedy and not serious enough to be considered a drama.

All in all, a nobody that is nice to see once, but which I probably won't watch a second time.

Nipped 3 strings
