This is my third viewing, and it remains incredibly entertaining! A truly summery film with a wonderful feel-good atmosphere and a Bill Murray who pulls out all the stops to bring his character to life in a wonderful way.

3.5 stars remain where they are.

A decidedly summer camp comedy filled with the usual ingredients of silly banter, sexual curiosity, romantic encounters, camp games, and a touch of slapstick. Against a backdrop of forest and lake, a fragmented film unfolds, filled with the disparate experiences of a group of camp counselors.

The film distinguishes itself from other films in the summer camp genre by its lack of nudity and its reasonably decent language. Two other elements that set the film apart are director Ivan Reitman and actor Bill Murray. For both, Meatballs marked their definitive breakthrough in filmmaking. Incidentally, both had already achieved some notoriety: Reitman as a director of obscure short films, and Murray through his role on the television show "Saturday Night Live."

In Meatballs, Murray has a great role as an anarchist camp counselor. Almost no segment is without Murray. The film is a one-man show in which Murray jokes with the other characters who play the role of informer. Murray goes all out. He's given space and uses it. The humor ranges from silly to amusingly absurd. Among the highlights are the camp announcements Murray broadcasts over the intercom. "Attention. Here's an update on tonight's dinner. It was veal. I repeat, veal. The winner of tonight's mystery meat contest is Jeffrey Corbin, who guessed, 'some kind of beef.'"

The film consists of short, sketch-like scenes, interrupted only by brief atmospheric impressions. The episodic nature of the film ensures a fast-paced pace and keeps the viewer engaged. A few more enduring threads bring romance and a sense of well-being to the film and foster a bond with the characters.

Meatballs represents fleeting and sunny entertainment. That's pretty much it.

Sometimes I wonder if filmmakers make movies just to amuse themselves and a small group of friends with the same humor... I've rarely seen such a bland, meaningless summer camp movie as Meatballs. Bill Murray is the most visible of all the characters, but he's an actor whose humor never really captured my heart, which completely destroyed the film's last potential asset. Just give me Revenge of the Nerds again, which is a masterpiece in comparison. If this is the most decent in the series, what horrors must the sequels be?
