I think Dupieux is a pleasant filmmaker, but his productions vary considerably in quality. After his brilliant "rubber" it took a while to get through three films that you can forget until the funny "au poste" and when the subsequent film "le daim/ deerskini" was actually even better than the previous one, I had good hope that Dupieux had finally found a consistent form.

Unfortunately, this film does not live up to those expectations. Mandibules is again a collection of fun, less fun and simply stupid and sometimes even annoying ideas that are stuck together with a minimal story. Exactly as we saw with films like "steak/wrong and reality", only this time a lot less absurd and confused. Because this time there is a kind of main story, namely about 2 stupid guys who train a gigantic fly.

But even a mediocre Dupieux is worth watching and because he always keeps the films short (this one is only 80 minutes) it also remains entertaining. None of the actors and characters are fun. Actually, they are more of a background on which Dupieux has pasted jokes. So, put a man on a unicorn bike. Have a woman talk in a funny voice. There is also a kind of box (toro) that comes back all the time. Characters here are nothing more than a peg to stick jokes on. This is a shame, these characters have no desires or wishes, they actually think little of each other and because of this the film lacks emotion and it never becomes really funny. This is partly due to the actors, who have zero charisma. But the screenplay is also just not good enough.

What remains is just a nice snack, mildly absurdist, with a few nice jokes that is over quickly and where there is clearly a lot of fun involved in the making process. After his previous two films it feels like a step back. Yet this film already has a lot more quality than its weakest links. And so I remain curious about his next one.

The idea is quite nice. Suddenly there is an overgrown fly, no one knows why, or wonders for a moment how this is possible. So far my positive points. Unfortunately, I found the humor far too forced. Dumb and Dumber the French way, but even less funny. I don't think a small almost smile every now and then is enough for a film that pretends to be a comedy. The fly itself is the nicest character, and I think it's quite impressive for a fly that the rest of the cast is more annoying than him. Adèle Exarchopoulos is a fantastic actress, but here she was very annoying with her screaming. Well, by accident, meh... quite easy to laugh about that.

If you explain the film in a few sentences to someone who has not seen it, it all sounds very nice and hilarious, but unfortunately the effect is very bland and not funny.

I thought The Buckskin was perhaps a little more clever, but these Mandibules also fit nicely into Dupieux's list. No questions are asked about the how, what and why. Maybe the idiots Manu and Jean-Gab are not capable of it either. They conceived the idea of extracting money from the beast with childish simplicity. Fortunately, they are smart enough to cover the animal with tape so that it does not fly away.

The second part of the film starts when they meet that gang of young people. There were also a few with some defects. Absurd situations and conversations without going to extremes. Maybe a bit too bland for some, but I thought it was quite OK.

Not great, but quite OK for once. I was mostly curious.
