A looming divorce, based on a misunderstanding, threatens to abruptly end a happy marriage on his fourth birthday. From that moment on, the light-hearted romantic comedy takes on the character of a crazy farce, which goes a little off the rails for my taste towards the end. In particular the costume party à la Mrs. Doubtfire (1993) is not exactly the kind of humor I'm looking for. Shame.
That does not detract from the fact that the irresistible duo Powell / Loy treats the audience to a nice comedy for the umpteenth time. As in many of the other films they made together, here too the wonderful contrast between the scheming William Powell and the phlegmatic Myrna Loy emerges. Razor-sharp dialogues do the rest.
One of the better screwball comedies, providing an hour and a half of great entertainment. Strange that apparently few people have seen this film.

This film has a high rating at IMDB and that is completely justified.

Very nice William Powell/Myrna Loy film, perhaps their best.

Loy thinks her husband Powell is cheating on her with an old flame (Gail Patrick) and wants a divorce.

To delay the divorce, Powell pretends to have gone mad and manages to convince the judge and doctors that he is completely mentally disturbed.

Unfortunately, he is unable to convince them that he made it all up and is locked up in an institution.

It sounds like a thriller, but it is a very nice comedy.

The scene in the elevator with Powell, Patrick and Elisha Cook Jr. is unforgettable and personally I would never step in that elevator again.

The scene reminded me a bit of the film "De Lift" by Dick Maas.

William Powell is fantastic in the lead role.

In addition to Powell and Loy, we see a very good cast with Gail Patrick, Jack Carson and Florence Bates as Powell's terrible mother-in-law.

Fun fact is that actress Gail Patrick never saw a movie she starred in during her film career.

She first saw herself in a film role in the 1970s, when a friend brought along a video of "My Man Godfrey."

I thought the costume party was very funny and well acted!

happy wife happy life, you can stick this statement to this film, it is striking that not much has to happen for Suzan's love for Steve to freeze like a freezer.

and while she is not really the innocent angel herself, of course it is all based on a misunderstanding, but she all too quickly goes straight to divorce, I did not know that divorce was already a thing at that time, but it The fact that 75% of divorces are initiated by the woman is confirmed here.

Furthermore, it is an amusing comedy, but not a winner in the genre. Powell is often funny, but I think he plays too much of the slacker who always desperately tries to please his wife.

That scene in the elevator was very bizarre, you would almost swear that Dick Maas saw that scene so he could use it in his film.
