Luis Buñuel is the perfect example of a director who likes to try things out and often just does what he feels like doing and then you get a film like this. There is absolutely no storyline to be discovered and you certainly shouldn't take this seriously. You just have to wait and see what crazy things come along and how much you will enjoy them in the end.

That's pretty much my experience watching this Le Fantôme de la Liberté. There's a lot of absurd and surreal scenes, most of which are fortunately quite funny. The fun often lies in the fact that you think you're watching something serious, after which something crazy often happens right after.

I can't really say much more about it. Seeing is believing and one will undoubtedly like this, while I can also understand that others will not like it. I like this in itself and can usually appreciate that crazy Buñuel, as here too.

3.5*

Excellent film in which a number of surrealistic and absurd scenes pass by. Despite the setup it does not really become fragmentary, and that is mainly due to how the scenes follow each other. Everything is possible and the film is therefore completely unpredictable. Not all scenes work equally well (I found the one with the toilet bowls the most striking). A small 4.0 stars for this very special film.

I was glad I had read the plot and knew it wasn't my fault that I didn't see a line in this film. My fourth Buñuel and except for 1 film the man doesn't really captivate me. Not this film either. Visually boring (sometimes ugly even) and nowhere really nice or let alone funny. Absurdism doesn't often appeal to me anyway. In this case it doesn't help that there isn't really an overarching story because if most of the separate parts don't captivate me then all those pieces together for 104 minutes certainly don't. Not everything is bad and a few moments worked but it was awfully little. 1.5*.
