"You can't choose your family...or can you?"
15-year-old Ellis Whitman has an introverted New Age mother and an estranged father, which means he's always had to rely on a conventional guardian: a goat-milking, marijuana-smoking man named "Goat Man." So when Ellis decides to leave his alternative lifestyle in his desert hometown for a school on the East Coast, it changes dramatically. Although he is often stoned, the clever Ellis performs extremely well. As the year progresses, he is challenged by the adults in his life about his beliefs, responsibility and trustworthiness.
