Forgotten Silver plot

The genius filmmaker Colin McKenzie, strangely enough, remained completely unknown until his death. During this time he is rediscovered and valued by Peter Jackson and Costa Botes; after all, he is responsible for countless technical innovations in the field of film, such as sound and color in films. Disorder and poverty, however, forced him to live his life without fame for his inventions.

I think I read somewhere that this was a mockumentary, but I forgot about it when I went to watch it. I realized it quite late, although I did wonder all the time why there was so much photo and film material of a great man that nobody knew. You can't get that much information from a few videos. I also thought that his life story was rather epic, cliché and very dramatic, but I didn't think anything about it yet. The expedition to the lost city also had a very strange atmosphere, just like the Stan the Man videos. Halfway through I put all the puzzle pieces together and the big picture emerged. Nice initiative from a director that I'm a fan of.

Funny mockumentary, in which Peter Jackson dryly and humorously recounts the history of the fictional New Zealand film pioneer Colin McKenzie. The film is also very realistic; Peter Jackson has invited a whole bunch of friends and acquaintances who praise McKenzie's early work to the skies (Sam Neill, Harvey Weinstein, Leonard Maltin), and the documentary also contains a fair amount of very cool recreated scenes from McKenzie's 'work', including a ten minutes or so of McKenzie's long-lost epic Salomé. The short running time and the strange adventures that McKenzie is said to have experienced make it a nice watch.

Hilarious, very cleverly constructed mockumentary in which director Peter Jackson 'accidentally' discovers a lost treasure trove of original film material, resulting in one of the greatest cinematographic discoveries in history. The tone of the whole thing is on the edge but not quite absurd, which is probably why viewers at the time actually thought it was all real. Clearly made with a lot of love and dedication and often very funny.
