Dumb and Dumber To plot

"The average person uses 10% of their brain capacity. Imagine what he could do with 1%."

After the crazy adventures of Harry (Jeff Daniels) and Lloyd (Jim Carrey) in the 1994 comedy classic, the pleasantly deranged friends are none the wiser. After a prank that Lloyd takes 20 years to do, the silly duo hit the road together because Harry just found out he has a teenage daughter. That's convenient, because Harry is looking for a donor kidney. Only the road trip to Harry's daughter doesn't go as planned.

I'm having trouble with this movie. The humor just doesn't appeal to me. Easy to score, bland and flat. Feet licking, peanut butter and dog scene, that kind of nonsense. I don't think it's funny. I am also a fan of those types. All too exaggerated, really none of the characters are appealing or funny.

I don't remember the first movie at all, but after seeing this movie I don't know if I'm in for a review.

Oof! Especially if you see this film immediately after the first part, it becomes painfully clear how un-funny Dumb and Dumber To is. That first film from 1994 already got a prequel, about which opinions were not exactly divided. But now not only the original directors returned, but also the two stars, that had to get much better. The end result is not good. Like most sequels, Dumb and Dumber To also relies on repetition, many of the jokes from the first movie are eaten, spat out and then served again. Sometimes it's not unkind winks to events from the first movie that are certainly good for a smile, but regularly entire jokes and scenes are replayed. Only a lot less good.

"Comedy is all about timing," Lloyd says freely at the beginning of the film. Ironic, because precisely in terms of timing and editing, this film is invariably wrong. Shots are too long, scenes go on too long and - the biggest problem - the jokes are not funny at all. For example, the story takes a completely unnecessary break in a retirement home for a dirty joke. Besides the fact that it's not funny at all, moments like this also completely stop the film. The story - just like the first film - has little to do with it, but the flow is also lacking here. Carrey and Daniels do their best with the material they've been given, so it's mostly the material that should be blamed. It apparently took six writers to develop a script that is not funny at all except for a few jokes. Whether you're looking at Carrey and Daniels or the Farrelly brothers; in Dumb and Dumber To you mostly see old men trying to do again what they did much better years ago. It's actually a bit pathetic.

To stars.

A lot less than the cult film from 1994. They miss the mark completely in this second part. A lot more vulgar and in any case a lot less funny than the original. I even had the impression that people were really offended like the search for that ex-girlfriend. Almost had the feeling of vicarious shame.

The other jokes no longer transcend the fun of underpants. Didn't really think Lloyd and Harry were sympathetic lads anymore. Sometimes really annoying and really rude/rude. And with that, the film stands or falls a bit. Not more my type of humor than...

The plot is also not very special and comes completely out of nowhere. A daughter all of a sudden, come on? Typical for a sequel like dragon movie.
