White Lightnin' plot

Jesco White's father is one of the best country dancers in the United States. Jesco has been using drugs since he was six, especially sniffing gasoline is his preference. In his teens he is more in juvenile detention than outside it, but when Jesco is in his twenties he too seems to have chosen the right path, because he now also dances just like his father used to. But it remains extremely difficult for Jesco to stay out of the world of drink and drugs and soon he finds himself again in a vicious circle from which it seems impossible to get out.

Good film about a man who has been addicted to drugs since childhood and has trouble staying on the right path. A portrait about a pretty disturbed individual in which the entire 'hillbilly/white trash' community is portrayed well. The film has a brisk pace and is talked together by an almost incessant voice-over. Wild and raw portrayed and stripped of almost all color. An excellent matching soundtrack.

A mediocre drama film...

Boring story...

Bad acting...

Drugs/syringes are not my thing...

Reasonable quality widescreen, black and white only,

no HD available...

Reasonable sound (no Dolby Digital present)...

Not worth it...

Friendly.

Although not thanks to the first half of the film. What fleeting, uninteresting drama, with an excess of time jumps. Now it's a bit of a far-from-my-bed show anyway and I have little affection for the setting incl. accompanying music, but it meant that empathizing was hardly an issue. Visually they try to hide the necessary with some faded filter, but the really nice shots only come in sparsely.

In the last half hour Murphy shifts up a gear and it immediately becomes more interesting. Hogg's spiritual uprooting, his descent into mania, gradually sets in. The endless strumming on banjos is - thank god - exchanged with a strong sample of atmospheric soundtrack. Especially that booming soundtrack that continues to reverberate continuously for about 20 minutes in the last half hour is impressive. Gradually Murphy (and Hogg with his performance) nevertheless creates a clever, dire atmosphere. It's a pity that it all goes so late.

Unfortunately, the very last scene can also rightly be called a downer. Ah. All in all, just enough for a small 3.0*. Nice movie, but can't compete with its genre contemporaries.
