Downsizing plot

"We are meant for something bigger."

As a solution to overpopulation and climate change, Norwegian scientists are devising a way to shrink organic matter. For financial reasons, a lower-middle-class couple decides to try the experiment. Once shrunk, they can live a luxurious life with their savings in a reduced human world, where they waste less land and food and produce less waste.

Due to the complete lack of a proper pace, my thoughts often drifted away, or I started to pay attention to other things. For example, there is a scene when Damon is at work. I look at the phone and think: we have that at work too. Oh well, I had to get some satisfaction out of something.

Terrible movie with a great idea but utterly failed in execution. The film lacks rhythm and flow and an overall tension, scenes follow each other but without much feeling they just seem to have been stuck together. Some scenes are also stretched and the film goes in all sorts of directions, so that it ends up going nowhere. I was bored to death. Damon is there as the man without qualities, but thinks he plays a little too silly. That Asian is annoying for a long time and just not funny, it only gets better later with a little more feeling. And I don't know what to think of Waltz yet, but that's the only bright spot anyway. Every now and then there is a nice moment and how the world is worked out is also quite funny (especially the Spanish enclave outside the walls is atmospheric), but the good music from the trailer is not even in it. 1.0*.

Small is beautiful. Oh, I thought it was pretty good. As a child I always thought of Suske & Wiske and the Kwakstraalen. Being so huge in a world full of tiny creatures gives you a certain power.

You know that such a thing is not possible of course, so you are constantly thinking about what could go wrong in such a situation. A single drop of rain would feel like a bucket of water being poured over your head, the snout of a mosquito (that device they bite us with, it bites I believe) would be that long, I've calculated it, if you index finger. They may have devised a kind of Madurodam-like world with a roof, but still.

I do like that unlike many other actors, Matt Damon doesn't care much about his body weight and just leaves a tummy tuck.

Size matters.

Not a big movie. It starts nice and fresh but develops like a dragon of a movie.

The start is fine with the reduction process and the philosophical and practical questions that are then raised. What are the positive or negative points of being small.

But soon the film takes a very strange turn, with the irritatingly caricatured Vietnamese as the low point that seems to ruin the entire film.

Despite the fact that I found the film terrible in the end, the Downsizing concept in itself is something to think about. Interesting.
