flats.

That's about all I can say about this movie. The tone is too serious for me, the conversations boring and the narrative structure doesn't work either.

With Johnny Depp (with eyes closed Antonio Banderas) and a fat Marlon Brando in the lead roles, this deserved better. Both actors are now also not particularly memorable roles, but can hardly be blamed.

Who, then, is to blame? Perhaps Jeremy Leven, responsible for both the script and the direction. With the given material and the fact that he is allowed to film his own writing, he does nothing ... unless his vision is just perpendicular to mine. That is of course also possible.

2.5

Brando seems to have geared everything in his acting - facial expression, voice, etc. - to the genre in which he is seen: the nigger. Somewhere behind his acting you see the great actor who can pull off emotional trophies from great heights, but he does all this in one of his last films in light version, which seems to be fine-tuned to what the film wants to convey. It sometimes seems as if Brando has taken a handful of tranquilizers before every shot. He is forgiven here, because as said it fits the setting, but an enthusiast would of course prefer to see the character player of yesteryear.

That makes it a no less enjoyable film, which in terms of plot is still very well put together. An original starting point is therefore packaged here in an everyday product. This can be seen as a missed opportunity - one thinks of Charlie Kaufman who meticulously instructs the director on the execution of his writing - or just take it as it comes. I do the latter, and for the occasion identify myself with the comfort that the film offers the soul.

Not wrong.

Got five stars from the Veronica TV Guide, but sometimes I don't think the reviews of it make any sense. I didn't think this was a five star film and that says the average a bit. But yeah, recorded anyway.

It's not a bad movie. It just struck me a bit that Marlon Brando, the iconic godfather, was incredibly disappointing. It very much seemed that he could not speak enough English and sometimes I really did not understand what exactly came out of his mouth.

Depp plays fine, and the movie is pretty smooth. It is certainly not a masterpiece, but dreaming away on the couch with your boyfriend / girlfriend is easy with this film.
