“If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball.”

I read a lot of comments here from people who hated dodgeball in the past, but then I probably went to a different high school because we always cheered when the sports teacher came out with the dodgeballs... And that you were one smooth comedy, Dodgeball proves. The big plus of this film is that everyone doesn't hold back but goes all the way. The characters are caricatures and in terms of humor the film kicks the accelerator completely and does not shy away from anyone or anything.

Ben Stiller in particular knows how to handle this material and is completely absorbed in his role as White Goodman. Vince Vaughn plays the "straight man" and that suits him. Some characters like Steve the Pirate don't work but luckily the focus remains on Vaughn and Stiller. Christine Taylor and Justin Long have the biggest supporting roles and although they lag behind in terms of humor (which is also a bit of the less humorous character that Taylor has to play), they do play their part well. It is clear that Dodgeball relies on Stiller and to a lesser extent Vaughn and the dodgeball scenes because otherwise it is not very interesting what director Marshall Thurber presents to the viewer. But the dodgeball scenes look unparalleled and are even compelling at times. Rip Torn also has a nice supporting role and Lance Armstrong's cameo is even more hilarious retroactively. The dodgeball scenes and the infectious play of the actors ensure that Dodgeball provides an entertaining movie night.

Amusing.

Genuinely funny film with a bland story that focuses on comedy. Sometimes there is some focus on romance, but with the many jokes that are all wrong and lame, there is little to swoon. Fortunately there is a lot to laugh about, but then the humor that is put down here must be your thing of course.

Because fair is fair, intelligent is not the humor that is used here. Everyone, with the exception of Vaughn and Taylor, is totally in overacting. Each actor portrays a rather ridiculous character and goes so far into this that it generates the necessary laughs. The jokes follow each other in rapid succession, and the dryness they use regularly has a beneficial effect.

The story is simple, and probably not a single thought has gone into it. Logic is lacking on all fronts, the loop is predictable and the characters we've seen before. Content-wise, this film is pretty empty, and yet the humor manages to compensate for this wonderfully. Dry, bland and loud, but it works. I'm usually not a fan of it, but bland stuff combined with sports does it very well.

Visually nicely shot, the dodgeball games are well directed, but bear in mind that it is mainly comedy and that for an exciting sports film it is better to look elsewhere. There is not much sport to be seen there. Stupid characters, strange acts. It's all in there. If this isn't your thing then Dodgeball won't be your thing, but if you see the humor in it then look no further.

Being able to laugh regularly with this stupid comedy. Completely without logic or story, but wonderful humor that passes you smoothly and quickly with a relatively short playing time. I have no problem with it. It's short, fresh and entertaining. If only there were more films that only focus on 1 genre.

Good film about the owner of a loss-making gym who has to come up with something to get money. The course of this film about dodgeball is somewhat predictable (nicely random). There is plenty to laugh about and the film is certainly not too long. A nice cast (including a few nice cameos) with a ridiculously ridiculous role by Ben Stiller. A small 3.5 stars for this directorial debut from Rawson Marschall Thurber.
