De Jurk plot

Tragicomic feature film about the life cycle of a blue summer dress with a leaf motif. The first owner of the dress is an elderly woman who, while wearing it, is overcome by an excitement that is fatal to her. Fate then takes the breezy garment past a young housekeeper, a teenage girl and a downtrodden woman. The blue dress not only touches the lives of its changing wearers, but also affects the various men in their environment.

I think 'The Dress' is one of Alex van Warmerdam's best films, along with 'Ober' and 'Borgman'. I think the starting point is original, we follow the life course of a dress. What I also think is a plus is that in this film 'the wide world' is explored which was not really the case in the previous two films. Humor and tragedy go hand in hand in 'The Dress', everyone acts well and it's all nice and absurd again.

My last of Warmerdam's oeuvre. I can conclude that I am a fan. I also really liked The Dress and you are immediately thrown into the story with some nice hilarious bed scenes between the older and the younger couple. The dialogues are very witty, dry and humorous.

Then you follow the evolution of the design of a dress. A dress that, as the film progresses, becomes a kind of aphrodisiac for men, but also brings about a certain joie de vivre for the women. Well, despite the feeling, the dress also brings a lot of trouble with it. MeToo put in an old-fashioned jacket, or something like that… While it is a bit light-hearted and playful in the beginning, the film evolves into a tragic or grim atmosphere.

It's all rather fragmentary, but every now and then something completely different is just refreshing. That scene with that pig or that gardener… amazing isn't it?
