Buba plot
Buba's real name is Jakob Otto. And the petty town criminal has a problem: when he's doing too well, he knows something terrible is about to happen. Since the death of his parents in a tragic accident, Jakob believes that all good feelings in his life must be compensated for. With his brother Dante, Jakob has developed a system to make his daily life as unpleasant as possible. For over thirty years it seems to work perfectly, until something happens that no one could have seen coming: he falls in love. As Jacob's feelings grow, so do his problems...

My favorite antagonist from 'How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast)' (2019) gets a raw deal with a rather tame origin story. Buba as a character worked well to contrast the dimwitted petty thief with the tech-savvy kids who have much more insight into how the internet works. But in 'Buba' (2023) all that remains is the satirical nod to a certain kind of German folksiness or petty bourgeoisness. Full of burping and farting fringe characters who pretend to be Albanians to be taken seriously. With flashbacks and quick montages you still get some of the energy of the series, but it mostly feels like a thin collection of poop and pee jokes about seedy characters. At some point even Buba's constant spluttering started to get on my nerves. To eventually build to a so-called 'Mexican Standoff' (several criminals in the same place) that feels completely undeserved.
