As a result of Borat 2, I finally set up this Brüno; 1 of the last Sacha Baron Cohen-type movies I had yet to see. Despite the very low score here, my expectations were not, because it happens that the Baron Cohen films here are sometimes rated relatively lower than I ultimately rate them. And that's how it turned out with Brüno. Great type. Much nicer than an Ali G. The scripted parts aren't that funny then, but I think there were also a lot of real things in them (although that is always difficult to estimate of course), and they are all very comical; the priest trying to straighten gays, the end of the wrestling and all those stupid Americans who are totally freaking out, the adoptive baby, the swinger party, who want to get mothers who wax their child into a shady commercial , .. I'm still forgetting things, all very nice sketches, in which it becomes very poignantly clear how conservative and one-dimensional and fucked up some people are or think. Cohen knows how to provoke reactions, and does that very well here too.

It's not as smart or funny as Borat, but presumably that film will no longer be surpassed, no matter what the best man may do. Borat 2 probably won't even come close. But still nice and funny, this.

With the new Borat I set up the first film again and that was a pleasant surprise. So I decided to try that other Larry Charles and Sacha Baron Cohen film, which I've heard mostly negative comments. And yes, compared to Borat, this Brüno is a lot less strong. The meaning is the same; Cohen visits as a character and shows how stupid, short-sighted and idiot certain Americans can be. And although this concept came into its own in the first Borat, there are enough moments that evoke the desired vicarious shame and hilarity. The cutscenes aren't very funny, but the moments when Brüno makes fun of people in a ridiculous way are often quite witty. And just like in Borat, a wrestling scene is the big highlight of the film. You can say a lot about Cohen, but he does have balls. And he often literally likes to show that in his films.

3 stars.
