Ben Stiller is in my humble opinion not a remarkable actor in the comedy world, but in more serious roles he shows his talent all the more.
Brad's Status is a quiet film with lots of dialogues and a voice over that works in his favor, in this way we fully empathize with Brad's thoughts, which are largely understandable and human, but at the same time can also cause irritation in people who don't understand.
Brad's slightly paranoid thoughts are nicely exposed by the voice over. He actually already has everything, a beautiful and sweet wife who loves him, a son who turns out to be not only healthy but also smart (and has also been convincingly portrayed by Austin Abrams) and a decent roof over his head, but it is still not enough for Brad who sees his wealthy childhood friends as more successful and brushes himself off as a loser.

The scene that he is confronted with the facts by the barely 21-year-old Ananya is therefore extra effective.

Is this the best drama movie of recent years? No, definitely not, but it's definitely worth your time.

3.5*

Good film about a man who visits a few universities with his son for further education. The main character is well portrayed and knows how to guide you through the film with ease (his reflections and reservations about his own life). The voice-over is perhaps a little overused. Ben Stiller is excellently cast here.

Ben Stiller stars as Brad Sloan, a man at an age where he compares his current "status" to his friends of yesteryear and especially sees his shortcomings. He does his best to prevent his insecurities from spilling over onto his son Troy [Austin Abrams] as they jointly search for a suitable college, with varying degrees of success. An intelligent screenplay about a struggle that many forties (myself included) will probably recognize, written with empathy and compassion for all characters and with a pleasant dose of enlightening humor and never sentimental.
