Arthur plot

"Not everyone who drinks is a poet, some of us drink because we're not."

The millionaire's son Arthur has no real purpose in life. He has too much money and lives alone with his faithful butler. Subtlety is not his characteristic and he fills his days mainly with consuming a lot of booze. His iron grandmother bids him marry the upper-class lady Susan, otherwise he will lose his right to his inheritance. Arthur, however, likes the humble shoplifter Linda much more.

Somewhat amusing comedy with Moore that can now be seen as a classic. Not everyone can appreciate this humor. Above average.

What I said earlier actually still applies to me, the scenes that Arthur (Dudley) is drunk are the best, that smile of his is quite contagious.

Still very entertaining after a second viewing, but the story is unfortunately very simple.

3 stars remain 3 stars.

As a comedy, Arthur falls quite short. Slow tempo, caricature, lots of repetition. After a while you've had it with the drunken Arthur. By the way: it is clear that Mike Myers partly got his inspiration for Austin Powers from Dudley Moore.

As a romantic story: Mwôh. It remains a bit unclear why exactly they fall for each other, real chemistry is missing, but it works.

The moments that brighten up the film are the dramatic moments. But yes, they only start 20 minutes before the end. Then suddenly there are sincere dialogues, the characters are less caricatured... and it's over in no time because it is a comedy after all.

But apart from the fact that Arthur isn't contemporary and hasn't stood the test of time, it's simply not that good. Music is started clumsily, the camera angles are very static, soft focus... aiaiai.

It may be a classic, but the rom-coms that came after it are much better.
