A Million Ways to Die in the West plot

"Bring protection."

The story is set during the Wild West, a time when a man's reputation was everything. Albert (Seth MacFarlane), a shepherd, loses his attractive girlfriend (Amanda Seyfried) after he gets scared during a single fight and withdraws from the duel. Discouraged by the event, the cowardly Albert hardly dares to show his face in public anymore. Then he meets a beautiful woman (Charlize Theron) with a mysterious past. While she helps Albert regain his confidence, they slowly but surely fall in love. Their relationship threatens to fall apart when her husband (Liam Neeson), a notorious criminal, shows up and Albert is challenged to a duel again.

Seth MacFarlane is definitely a better director than an actor. Type Adam Sandler or Jason Segel. The film has the necessary potential with humor that is reminiscent of Naked Gun or Deadpool, but it is too good for that. For every good joke, you also get to see teenage humor with (even literally) the necessary piss and poop humor. Around the time of filming, they were also working on Mad Max: Fury Road with Charlize Theron. The difference couldn't be greater...

It has become a film with a mixed feeling. I laughed but also got annoyed by certain jokes. Charlize Theron isn't bad, but Seth MacFarlane pulls the scenes down again. All in all, it's not too bad and it could be a lot worse...

Laugh or I'll shoot... The individual jokes often work well here, the dance with the mustaches is hilarious, and Giovanni Ribisi and Sarah Silverman make a nice maybe-not-quite-matching couple, but where the film falls short is in the contrivance of the plot. According to James Berardinelli "the funniest movies are usually the ones in which the jokes flow easily and there's a sense of spontaneity about their delivery. In A million ways to die in the west, too many gags are labored, repetitive, or predictable." And I can agree with that. In a good script, the plot is strong and the characters are fairly lifelike, so that the events are naturally funny and the reactions of the characters natural yet funny. (Example from A fish called Wanda : Otto wondering why Archie's daughter Portia was named after a car brand – that's funny and it fits Otto perfectly.) At A million ways to die in the West, on the other hand, too often I get the idea that the scene was written around the joke, and although I sometimes laughed out loud, there were often parts where I just sat waiting instead of eager to watch the sequel, and MacFarlane is certainly not an actor who keeps your eyes glued to the canvas. So mixed feelings.

This could have been a fun western farce if it weren't for the childish shit and pee jokes that are fatal to the film's quality. The witty Sarah Silverman steals the show.
