Excellent film about the Sex Pistols bass player and his relationship with an American groupie. The first half mainly deals with the music and London punk scene of the late 1970s (and this comes through nicely here). The second half is a lot darker in tone and focuses on the destructive relationship between the two title characters (here strongly played by Gary Oldman and Chloe Webb).

As an adolescent my attitude towards punk rubbed off because of the socially critical statements, but I have always been spared the nihilism that seems to belong to punk. However, I still like to turn on the Sex Pistols, that genuinely angry, but also energetic music works well for me.

This film was therefore a must-see for me, also because I simply love music biographies. And this movie does that well. I really got the idea of getting an insight into the England of the 1970s, with all the misery that came with it. The attitude of the punks can be explained in this society. The sad story of Sid and Nancy is aptly portrayed and the desperation of both feels realistic.

Still, it's a film I don't necessarily like to put on. The hugely negative eventually gets tiresome, and the eventual murder and overdose almost comes as a redemption. Which it might actually have been for these doomed souls.

3.5*

For lovers of this culture: The filth and the fury is a good documentary about the Pistols, and also places their music well in the cultural context.

Looked at this biography once, but wasn't really familiar with it. Well, there is a lot of quarreling in this film, so after the umpteenth quarrel you've had it a bit.

Gary Oldman did a good job in my opinion.

There was not only music from the Sex Pistols, but also some other music, I thought it was a nice mix.

Thought it was good for once, but I'm not really blown out of my socks.
