A bit of a mix of Pacifiction, in terms of visual style, also due to the same cinematographer (Artur Tort), and Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes, the content of an insane expedition into the unknown, but not as good as those two.

Director Lev Diaz is very focused on those beautiful slow cinema images, but in my opinion, he does little of interest with the story of Fernão de Magalhães (Gael García Bernal). A traditional explorer film with the necessary action, even with a modern anti-colonial slant, was never within Diaz's reach with his approach, but he also does not dare to make the full journey into the heart of darkness like Herzog and Serra did in the aforementioned films. Or Winding Refn with Valhalla Rising. What you get now is a fairly traditional story told in a somewhat more artistic way. But very beautiful nonetheless.
