For a rock and roll film I thought it was rather boring and good, and the tape is average at best.
The only difference is that it takes place in Leningrad in the early 1980s, but we don't even get that much of it.

Also the love triangle is rather lackluster, no sex (one calf kiss) no suspense... felt almost as cold as the cold war. Everything just babbles on. Only when the music from the West is played and some fantasy events are animated, the film revives a bit.

Which immediately illustrates how far Western pop music is qualitatively far from the underground music scene in Leningrad / the entire Eastern Bloc, and that we are lucky that Great Britain and its surroundings were not occupied by the Soviet Union in the sixties and beyond.

Very boring biopic about the two pop bands Zoopark and Kino in Leningrad and a love triangle between the frontmen and a girl in the early 1980s. I didn't notice much of the Russian and/or communist context that could have given the biography some atmosphere and character, other than that the lyrics had to go through the censors beforehand (but that wasn't a problem) and the audience wasn't allowed to dance (but that was not a problem either because the audience enjoyed the music anyway). There are always annoying bits woven in where ordinary Russians on the bus spontaneously and off-key sing Western pop songs (with the unnecessary disclaimer that this didn't really happen), which bits are very embarrassing. I was happy when the movie was over; the only positive thing about the film is that it evokes memories and nostalgia for the rock 'n' roll and punk in the West that - unlike the one in Russia - was exciting.

In any case, an extensive sketch, atmosphere and era of young Russian pop artists with a strong yearning for Western freedoms.

The scenes "this did not happen" very clearly indicate the pressure that was there to keep young people away from western influences. The event on the train is a wonderful cinematic example of this.

On the other hand, there was little to experience in those Russian songs, nor in the romance in the story.

A film that is allowed in 2018, in 1981 it was a bit different.
