Mediocre film about a father who wants to create awareness for bullying because of his son. The non-linear narrative style doesn't work well here. And although the dialogues between father and son are good along the way, these scenes don't work well in the end because of the unnecessary plot twist. Based on a tragic true story. Nice to see Gary Sinise again.

In May 2013, Joe Bell [Mark Wahlberg] embarked on a 2,000-mile hike from La-Grande, Oregon to New York to raise awareness of the impact of teen bullying. The immediate reason is his son Jadin [Reid Miller] who, after coming out for his homosexuality, suffered badly from the bullying behavior of boys at his school. During Joe's hike, Jadin confronts his father about his own attitude and behavior and Joe begins to wonder aloud whether he has failed his son. Wahlberg's image as the ideal image of American masculinity makes him the dream choice for this role on paper and Wahlberg throws himself wholeheartedly into one of his few serious dramatic roles. Green teeters on the precipice when it comes to sentimentality in the final quarter, but the cast's heartfelt performances (including Gary Sinise as an empathetic sheriff) make it hard not to get a lump in your throat.

Nice.

Gripping movie. One that I myself would have told in a linear way, but even then still comes across quite well. The bullying is very cliché, but of course it is in real life. Its impact is by no means small. Both the son and the father receive sufficient attention so that the film is not only about bullying, but also about themes that arise from it. The fact that the entire cast does excellent acting also helps a film like this.
