'City of Lies' tells the true story of one of the most infamous crimes of recent years, the murder of rapper 'The Notorious BIG'. Detective Russell Poole has been trying to solve the murder case for years, but after two decades the case is still open. In search of the truth, the two team up to unravel a growing network of institutional corruption and lies.

On March 18, 1997, undercover agent Reese [Keith Szarabajka] shoots and kills a black man after an altercation and a chase. Detective Russell Poole [Johnny Depp] discovers during the investigation that the victim was also a cop who had infiltrated Death Row Records. That revelation reinforces Poole's suspicions that the police themselves may have been involved in the death of Notorious BIG earlier that month. This biographical crime drama shows how Poole spent years trying to uncover the truth and how his reputation and personal life suffered as a result. Years later, the case comes back to life when a persistent journalist [Forest Whitaker] takes on the case. Depp and Whitaker pull off what could have been an intriguing, suspenseful thriller. Unfortunately, Christian Contreras' screenplay gets bogged down in too much bullshit and there isn't enough action, so the end result is quite disappointing. Based on the non-fiction book of the same name by Randall Sullivan.

City of Lies is story-wise an interesting film. Special events regarding the death of various rappers in the nineties, including the case of biggie. The setting, decor and acting is very good. Definitely enjoyed this movie.

Good.
Very entertaining police film. Johnny Depp, who finally plays a 'normal' role again, plays his role lived and moody. The content is sometimes a bit ram-on-the-branch, but that may be deliberate. I have very little with the music, let alone the rivalry in that rap circuit, then this film is not so bad as to arouse some interest.
