Movie about Mark 'Chopper' Read. In Australia, Chopper is a controversial figure: the most famous ex-criminal and one of the most widely read writers in the country. While in prison, Chopper dreams of becoming a famous and feared criminal. He just got 16 years for kidnapping a judge - a crazy attempt to get a locked-up friend out. The struggle for power ignites in prison. Chopper is indeed gaining fame for his increasingly terrifying behavior. When he is released eight years later, he seems driven by guilt and revenge at the same time. He soon causes problems again - for example by announcing everywhere that he has carte blanche from the police to clean up 'scum'.

''... and I can't even bloody spell.'' Great movie, with a brilliant Eric Bana. An unpredictable, frightening and at the same time extremely (black) comic character. Had a great time.

Bana's Australian accent alone is great - add that headline and his totally idiotic and cross-border actions and you'll be laughing your ass off. Director Dominik creates a strong atmosphere and some memorable scenes; eg. when he gets stabbed by his ''mate'' or when he beats his girlfriend (and her mother) with a beating. Crazy and actually hilarious at the same time.

Yes, nice, nice. In fact, it really isn't about anything at all, yet Dominik provides an extremely entertaining whole. Visually strong, some nice tricks and a nice pace. Thick enough.

Special sketch of a strange man.

And therein lies the strength of the film. Chopper is rude, aggressive and unpredictable, but also slightly insecure and jealous. Bana cleverly shapes his character, which keeps it interesting in what kind of situations he will end up in. Fortunately, visually it remains fascinating, nice use of colors. At times the film falters a bit, but on the other hand there are just as many extremely entertaining scenes.

Spacious 3*

Mme.

Didn't expect much from it either, because films like Chopper immediately make it clear what they benefit from. In this case, it's Bana himself, who actually takes the film on his shoulders and discharges the viewer through it. If it were up to director Dominik, the film would fall completely into the boring void, but Chopper puts a stop to that.

Beneath the endearing type of Bana rests a relatively normal prison/crime film with rather empty content. The story just ripples along, seems to have been written around Bana's character on the spot. In almost every scene we follow him and not really the environment around him. The film therefore has no real relative content.

It's still entertaining, but I didn't find the fairly bare-bones layout of the film particularly appealing. Somewhat boring establishments and a director who only really shows his teeth in terms of style in the last 15 minutes. Furthermore, it is mainly following whatever Bana is up to and that does not know for a playing time of 94 minutes. Crazy types are always fun, but they don't last for such a length of time.

Nice movie, but not one that will leave an impression. Without Bana, this film would have completely collapsed. Boring peripheral characters, boring decor and an empty story, but fun antics from Bana. Gives the film a small quirky touch, but not an impressive one. Because of this, I can only really appreciate Chopper halfway.
