Fine animation film that pays tribute to the western on the basis of some desert creatures. All a bit cliche and predictable, of course. The story of a lying loser who thinks he's a hero, falls off his pedestal and eventually turns out to be a hero, has been milked out in Hollywood for a while. But that shouldn't spoil the fun, because Verbinski and Depp made a nice animation film of it. Nice references also to a number of films, including the famous clock from The quick and the dead. Visually and in terms of atmosphere, it all looks neat. The film breathes western and that's how it should be.
It does fall in here and there, however. Not all critters are equally interesting. The air raid with the hawk was very nice and funny. The rattlesnake scenes were also fantastic. It's also nice that it's not about gold, but about the precious water. Ideally tailored for children and also up-to-date. Winner at the Oscars at the time as best animated film at the time, before Puss in boots among others. Well, why not actually?

“No man can walk out of his own story.”
Nice animation film. Rango's story isn't too special, and it uses a lot of material from old classics. Clint Eastwood even stops by. Johnny Depp is great as Rango, and the other voice actors do well too. There's chemistry, it's entertaining and the animation looks good too. Some of the film's issues keep things from working, but when Rango and the other characters go on an adventure, it's an exhilarating ride.

An animation film that explicitly refers to Singin' In The Rain, Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas and Lawrence of Arabia in the first ten minutes can never be bad. Johnny Depp is also superb in the title role and the realistic animation of the many animal characters that appear in this western is a daring, but successful choice. Visually stunning at times, the plot about a lizard [Depp] posing as gunfighter Rango and getting caught up in a conflict between villagers and their mayor [Ned Beatty] is a messy mishmash of references to western classics.
