During a cold winter, a poor lumberjack's wife [Dominique Blanc] comes true with her wish for a child after a baby is thrown from a train into the snow. Her husband [Grégory Gadebois] considers the baby a "heartless" man responsible for the death of Jesus and wants to get rid of him. But the woman manages to fool her husband for a long time, until the baby's pure innocence thaws the grumpy lumberjack's heart. This storyline is mixed with that of the father [Antonin Maurel] who threw the baby from the train and later arrives in Auschwitz with his wife and other child, and vividly shows his struggle for survival. With a minimum of dialogue, Hazanavicius and co-writer Jean-Claude Grumberg create an extraordinarily compelling picture of two connected lives that, despite the terrible circumstances, draw on the power of love. The use of authentic baby sounds is a masterstroke and the result is simply unforgettable. Heartwarming, penetrating and, above all, deeply moving. One of the best films about the Shoah and the power of love.
