Fun & Fancy Free plot

"It’s Got That DISNEY MAGIC!"

Two different Disney stories linked by 'Jimmy the Cricket'. The first story is about a circus bear, Bongo. He is adored during his performances but completely ignored afterwards. Sad as he is, he flees into the forest, but everything is not as free there as he thought. The second story is about Donald Duck, Goofy and Mickey Mouse trying to find a stolen singing harp to give their poor kingdom some wealth.

Fun and Fancy Free consists of two cartoons of approximately 36 minutes each, which have been combined into one feature-length animated film. The first cartoon, Bongo, is based on the short story “Little Bear Bongo” from 1936 by American writer Sinclair Lewis. The story is narrated by American singer Dinah Shore. The second cartoon, Mickey and the Beanstalk, is based on the famous fairy tale “Jack and the Beanstalk”. The story is narrated by American actor Edgar Bergen.

Originally, Bongo and Mickey and the Beanstalk were to be developed into two separate, feature-length animated films, but that idea was abandoned due to the financial crisis Disney was facing, as well as World War II. Towards the end of World War II, however, it was decided to produce both films after all, but as short animated films. This was also the last time Walt Disney himself provided the voice of Mickey. Both animated films are highly entertaining but have little in common, so there is no real overarching storyline running through the film. However, some hints were given regarding future projects such as Cinderella, and the giant's magic was later used for the magical cat in Alice in Wonderland.

All in all, Fun and Fancy Free is an entertaining compilation film, but, like the other compilation films, it cannot measure up to Disney's feature-length work. Released in the Netherlands as Vrij en Vrolijk.

Mediocre.

I often find Disney films more palatable as an omnibus of short films, so I did have some expectations here. Even though it only involves two films, which is precisely where the first problem lies. The 30 minutes are just a bit too long for both short films.

Bongo is fun for a while, but everything is dragged out quite a bit and there is actually hardly any story. With Mickey & the Beanstalk, the main problem is that this story has been told so many times that it just gets a bit boring when there isn't much else to do.

The bits with Cricket in between aren't really great either, but the live-action bits were funny. Quite weird and un-Disney too, which is probably why it was fun. Vague puppets and slightly more direct humor. All in all, not a disaster to watch once; it doesn't last long and there are a funny scene here and there, but I didn't find it truly outstanding.

2.0*

It wasn't too bad, considering my earlier mediocre experiences with Disney omnibus films from this period. This one actually consists of only two stories, unfortunately with some framing narratives surrounding them that are neither very engaging nor even irritating in the second half. However, the stories are watchable and a significant improvement over Melody Time (yes, I know that one was released later). Although the quality here is quite inconsistent as well; the first story about the escaped circus bear Bongo is a bit boring and saccharine. Fortunately, the second story is much better, featuring Donald Duck, among others, who is his short temper. It’s not exactly a masterpiece, but it is perfectly fine to get through.
