Tasty classic everyone wants each other lurking movie. Some actors are clearly having fun in their roles, although the women are a bit colorless. Some action scenes and especially the storming scene are very well done.

Good film in which two Americans are hired by an emperor during the Mexican Civil War. An entertaining story. For a 1950s American western, this film is quite cynical in tone and has both a hero and an anti-hero. Furthermore, enough beautiful pictures of the Mexican landscape and Gary Cooper and Burt Lancaster are well cast.

Filmed on Mexican soil, you can enjoy the arid landscapes, pyramids and picturesque cityscapes. The story that takes us through the beautiful scenery can perhaps best be described as an adventure with a good pinch of nihilism. The latter has mainly to do with the contribution of Burt Lancaster's character, but also with the way in which the government forces and the rebel army alternately function as cannon fodder. See the open attack of the rebels on the city walls and the scene where Gary Cooper shoots down the government troops with some kind of mitraillette. From my reading, this film was a major influence for Sergio Leone and I am not surprised.

Some things in the film didn't seem realistic to me anyway. Like the rebel troops that appear out of nowhere and surround the Americans twice in the film; a kind of completely exaggerated display of power that only serves to impress the viewer, but for me undermines the level of reality. I also agree with the comments on the forum about Lancaster's snow-white teeth that transcend everything and everyone for a whole movie. Especially in the somewhat dark scenes I was a bit afraid that Lancaster's shiny teeth would give up his position.

For me it was a revision after many years and now I can conclude that it is not quite my thing.
