I happened to see this film on MGM, and I must say it was fun to see a very young Kirsten Dunst in one of her first films. It's a typical teen adventure film with the usual clichés and some not-so-great acting (particularly by August Schellenberg as the pathetic Indian Khonanesta and Zachery Ty Bryan, known for Home Improvement, who also rarely appeared in films afterward), but overall, it's a pretty enjoyable film (except for the terrible music). The latter is partly due to the beautiful nature shots. The film is also quite touching here and there, like the scene with the bear in the bear trap and the subsequent teasing of the poachers.

As Stinissen indicates above, this is a film primarily intended for young children (6-10 years).

Well-intentioned children's entertainment with a few ecological lessons and a still-teenage Kirsten Dunst.... It's essential not to dwell too much on the film's naiveté. No one really gives a fantastic performance, the fake Indian who speaks English is cringe, and I found the music with all that Indian whining awful, but no child or teenager will lose any sleep over this. In this young adult adventure film genre, I found the similar Alaska (1996) much better, but as a family film with children on a Sunday afternoon, this is suitable material.
