England, 17th century. The ambitious and self-centered Barbara seduces Sir Ralph Skelton, the betrothed of her best, but also naive friend Caroline. Barbara and Ralph get married, but Barbara is soon tired of her new luxurious life. Out of boredom, she gambles and forfeits all her possessions. Inspired by the stories of the highwayman Captain Jackson, Barbara dresses up as a highwayman and then steals her belongings back. She likes the highway robbery and Barbara regularly goes out. On one of her trips she encounters the real Captain Jackson and the two become lovers. However, when Barbara catches Jackson with another woman, she takes revenge.
